About Hikana

Hikana (pronounced “hi-KAH-nah”) was founded by Samuel Epiphany in July, 2025 as a solution to the condition of individual loneliness and isolation in Regina. The name "Hikana" was inspired by the Cree word "masinahikana" which means "books" since the inspiration to build Hikana came from a conversation in a library.

Backstory:
Shortly after moving in with his wife and 1 year old son as tenants in a single family home in the North Central neighbourhood of Regina, Samuel and his family suffered an attempted break-in only one day after moving into the property.

After witnessing multiple troubling events and activities throughout the family's stay in the neighbourhood, Samuel reached out to local agencies and social workers to better understand the needs of the North Central community in search of a way to make a positive change to the neighbourhood.

One such visit to the Mâmawêyatitân community centre in North Central led to a conversation with a resource counsellor who pointed out the problematic condition of isolation and loneliness that people of all ages struggle with, not only in North Central, but across the city of Regina.

Other visits to organizations such as the Senior Citizens' Centre and Open Door Society among others, provided insight into the isolation and loneliness condition of seniors, immigrants, and other demographic groups.

Hikana was founded as a solution to the condition of individual loneliness and isolation, not only in Regina, Saskatchewan, but wherever the problem persists.
